Your Specs Are Trapped in Chat Logs
You’re already writing specs
If you’ve used an AI coding assistant to build anything nontrivial, you’ve written specifications. You just didn’t call them that.
“Build me a login form that validates email format, requires a minimum 8-character password with at least one number, shows inline errors below each field, and disables the submit button until both fields are valid.”
That’s a specification. It has defined inputs, explicit validation rules, stated UI behavior, and a condition for a state change. It’s structured enough that an AI can generate a conforming implementation, and specific enough that you could test the result against each clause.
You wrote it in a chat window. The AI turned it into code. You moved on to the next prompt. And the specification — the actual description of what the software should do — is now buried in a conversation thread that you’ll never open again.
The most expensive disposable artifact in software
Think about what’s actually in those conversations.
Not just the final prompt that produced the working code. The whole thread. The initial description that was too vague. The follow-up where you clarified the edge case. The correction when the AI misunderstood the business rule. The refinement where you added the error handling requirement you forgot the first time. The back-and-forth where you and the AI converged on the right behavior.
That conversation is a specification discovery process. You started with an incomplete understanding. Through iteration, you arrived at a precise description of what the software should do. Every clarification added a clause. Every correction fixed an ambiguity. By the end, the conversation contains a detailed behavioral specification — far more detailed than most teams ever write in a formal requirements document.
And then it disappears. The code ships. The conversation scrolls into history. The specification that produced the code is orphaned from the implementation it created.
Chat logs are write-only documentation
The problem isn’t that the knowledge doesn’t exist. It’s that it exists in the worst possible format for long-term use.
Chat logs are unstructured. The specification is interleaved with false starts, debugging tangents, “actually, wait” moments, and the AI’s explanations of its own output. Extracting the final, validated specification from a conversation thread requires reading the entire thing and mentally filtering signal from noise.
Chat logs are ephemeral. They live in a tool that wasn’t designed for knowledge management. They’re not versioned. They’re not searchable by specification content. They’re not linked to the code they produced. When the conversation is closed or the tool’s history rolls over, the specification is gone.
Chat logs are personal. They live in one person’s account. If another developer needs to understand what the code does, they can’t access the conversation that defined it. The specification is locked behind an individual’s session history, just as surely as it was locked in an individual’s head before AI came along.
We replaced one form of ephemeral knowledge with another. The specification used to be trapped in the developer’s mental model. Now it’s trapped in their chat history. The code is still the only surviving artifact, and the reasoning behind it is still lost.
The irony of AI-assisted development
Here’s what’s strange about this situation. AI has made it easier than ever to articulate specifications. The conversational interface encourages people to describe behavior in detail. When the AI gets something wrong, you correct it — which means you’re refining the spec in real time. The natural flow of prompting an AI is specification work.
Before AI assistants, most developers went straight from a vague mental model to code. The specification, such as it was, existed only in their head. There was no intermediate step where they described the behavior in structured natural language.
Now there is. The prompt is that intermediate step. Developers are describing software behavior in more detail and with more precision than they ever did in requirements documents, sprint planning, or ticket descriptions. They’re doing it because the AI demands it — vague prompts produce vague code, so developers learn to be specific.
The specification work is happening. It’s just not being captured.
What capture would look like
Imagine if the specification that emerged from an AI conversation were automatically extracted and preserved as a structured artifact.
Not the raw chat log. The distilled specification: the final set of behavioral assertions that the conversation converged on. The validated rules, the defined edge cases, the agreed-upon inputs and outputs. Cleaned of the conversational noise and formatted as a structured spec that can be versioned, searched, linked to its implementation, and referenced by other developers.
When a new developer inherits the code six months later, they don’t need to read the code and reverse-engineer what it does. They read the spec. When a product manager asks what the login form’s validation rules are, the answer isn’t “check the code” — it’s in the specification that was captured when the feature was built.
When the behavior needs to change, the developer doesn’t start from scratch in a new chat. They pull up the existing spec, modify the relevant clause, and use that as the prompt for the next iteration. The specification evolves alongside the code, because it was captured as a first-class artifact from the beginning.
The conversation is the discovery phase
We’ve written before about the discovery phase nobody wants to pay for. The argument is that the most valuable phase of any software project is the one where you figure out what to build — and it’s the phase that gets skipped most often because it doesn’t produce visible output.
AI conversations are the discovery phase. When you spend twenty minutes going back and forth with an AI assistant, refining your description of what a feature should do, you’re doing discovery work. You’re testing your understanding against the AI’s interpretation and closing the gaps.
The problem is that this discovery is treated as a means to an end. The end is the code. The discovery — the specification — is discarded once the code exists. It’s like conducting a thorough site survey before building a house, producing detailed soil reports and load calculations, and then throwing them all away once the foundation is poured. The knowledge was valuable. Discarding it is waste.
From disposable to durable
The fix isn’t to change how people work with AI. The conversational, iterative flow of prompt-and-refine is a natural and effective way to develop specifications. The fix is to capture the output of that process in a form that lasts.
Every AI-assisted development session that produces working code also produces a specification. The specification is embedded in the conversation. It needs to be extracted, structured, and stored as an artifact that’s linked to the code, versioned alongside it, and accessible to everyone who needs to understand what the software does.
This is the piece that’s missing from the current AI-assisted development workflow. The coding part works. The deployment part works. The specification part — the part that turns a throwaway conversation into durable, reusable knowledge — is still being done by hand, if it’s done at all.
The teams that figure out how to capture specifications from AI conversations will build software that compounds knowledge over time. The ones that don’t will keep having the same conversations, rediscovering the same requirements, and losing the same knowledge — just faster than before.
